Haas School of Business, University of California, Berkeley, Connie & Kevin Chou Hall

Berkeley, CA

Overview

Enrollment at Haas School of Business, University of California has doubled over the past 20 years to more than 2,300 undergraduate and graduate students in seven degree programs. The new six-story, 80,000 sf Connie & Kevin Chou Hall adds 858 total classroom seats to the campus in a state-of-the-art building. Telecommunications infrastructure, security, and audiovisual systems designed by TEECOM enable seamless classroom and digital learning integration. It is also the first academic building in the U.S. designed for LEED Platinum certification and WELL certification (given to buildings that promote user health and well-being). “It’s an exciting time to add this new kind of space for our faculty to teach and students to learn in new ways,” said Dean Rich Lyons. “It will transform the educational experience for generations to come.”

TEECOM’s Solutions

Behind Chou Hall’s concrete and steel post-tensioned shear walls hums a complex infrastructure of cabling that supports high-performance digital collaboration. Each of the eight tiered classrooms in the building is equipped for video capture (streaming or recorded) and teleconferencing, all monitored and controlled through a Technology Operations Center. Push-to-talk microphones and multiple cameras spotlight classroom participants. Early reviews of the audiovisual systems are positive. Finance Lecturer Stephen Etter said, “It was all great. The AV, the sound, and especially the eyes of the students. When I looked into their eyes, I saw a glow of enthusiasm and intellectual excitement. And of course they adapted immediately to the technology.”

Benefit to the Client

Berkeley Haas badly needed Chou Hall to lessen crowding and achieve its growth plans. Beyond that, Chou Hall introduces students to leading-edge technology used by businesses to enable collaboration. Displays in each of the 28 study rooms accommodate multiple student connections. A 300-person event space on the top floor of the building hosts innovation sessions, with a large-format video display as its centerpiece. Beautiful, interactive, and sustainable, Chou Hall provides an inspiring learning laboratory for Berkeley Haas students where in-person and digital collaboration go hand-in-hand.
