University of Texas at Dallas invested in a high-design, high-technology 160,000 sf Arts and Technology Center. Offering majors such as digital design and video game design, the center strives to attract top students who will enjoy a private design specialty school education at a fraction of the cost of a comparable school. Ubiquitous Wi-Fi and cellular coverage in common areas encourages students and faculty to congregate and enjoy interactive and exhibit spaces that celebrate students’ work.

Technology was not viewed as an intrusion to the architectural design, but as an integral part of the aesthetic design. TEECOM provided designs for telecommunications rooms, pathways, backbone and horizontal cabling, and grounding systems along with security video surveillance, access control, and an alarm management system to support this educational facility for the future, as well as construction administration services.

Behind the Walls

It’s All About the Network: Designing for high-level, data-demanding clients such as the UTD doctorates posed an exciting opportunity for our design team. Because technology access is requisite for most majors housed in this building, available bandwidth was a concern, as was flexibility to enable UTD to adopt new technologies as they become available. Ensuring superb user experience entailed installing large amounts of cabling, pathways, and fiber optics. In fact, TEECOM designed 48 Cat6A cables per classroom, which far exceeds the typical classroom’s bandwidth. To accommodate the intensive and extensive use of technology, the center also includes a major server room that supports unique bandwidth consumers.
