Moscone Convention Center Expansion

San Francisco, CA

Overview

Though one of the most successful convention centers in the U.S., San Francisco’s Moscone Center was operating at capacity and losing business to competing markets with more space to offer. To continue to attract top events, the City and the San Francisco Tourism Improvement District Management Corporation launched a $530-million expansion. The work occurred while Moscone Center remained operational to the public. It involved relocating a 1980s-era Main Distribution frame (MDF) and associated cabling and designing an under-floor pathing system for 504,000 contiguous sf of exhibition space that could withstand heavy weight loads and provide access to services in multiple configurations.

TEECOM’s Solution

TEECOM provided integrated technology design for telecommunications, security, audiovisual, voice, network, and wireless systems. We documented the outdated cabling infrastructure and planned disconnection and reconnection of all cabling. We cut, re-routed, and relocated the fiber optics, copper, cables, and analogue. We designed “client cages” that allow clients to bring their equipment, such as servers and security devices, into a designated room, connect to the MDF room, and distribute the technology throughout the facility. We designed a custom floor box and pathing system capable of carrying AV services, cable TV, fiber optics, copper, and power for lighting.

Benefit to the Client

“Of all of the disciplines on this project, TEECOM’s documents probably stood up during construction better than any – meaning the fewest errors or omissions. Given what a challenge I know some of the early coordination was, that’s saying something.”

– Sandy Greig, Associate Director, SOM

“TEECOM worked well with the AV subcontractor in the implementation of the design to construction. TEECOM worked hand-in-hand with the owner and AV installer to come up with agreeable value engineering solutions. TEECOM showed their value by being responsive to all forms of communications and their willingness to attend and participate in meetings and come up with solutions.”

– Brent Lee, Assistant Project Manager, WEBCOR
